Since its founding on December 4, 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African-Americans and people of color around the world.Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African-Americans, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood among African descendants in this country. Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) is an honor society for students, particularly undergraduates, dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of biological study and extending boundaries of human knowledge through scientific research. Since its founding in 1922, more than 200,000 persons have been accepted into lifetime membership, and more than 626 chapters have been established throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.

We, the members of the Black Student Union, exist to promote a positive image of African American students on campus. We will accomplish this by developing strong black leaders, promoting a positive African American image on campus, unifying all black organizations and providing an alliance for the betterment of our campus community. Any student enrolled at Missouri Western can use the campus cupboard. Students will need to present a valid student ID. Students can visit the cupboard up to twice a month. Each visit students are allotted two bags of groceries that can add up to 20 lbs total. Our StoryThe Campus Cupboard is a valuable campus resource that has served many students since its opening in 2015. It was developed through the collaborative efforts of the Rotaract Club, Dr. Elise Hepworth in the Music Dept. and the Division of Student Affairs. The Division of Student Affairs currently oversees the operation of the Cupboard. The cupboard is supplied with perishable and non perishable food items along with some personal care products. This is the results of campus food drives and donations from individuals business partners as well as student and community organizations. Items Most Frequently Needed Canned meat (tuna, chicken, spam, etc.) Condensed milk or shelf stable milk Dry goods - pasta, noodles, rice, etc. Peanut butter/jelly/shelf stable spreads Canned soups and shelf stable meals Fruit and/or pudding cups Swipe Out Hunger Got extra meal swipes? Missouri Western is partnered with Swipe Out Hunger to help raise money and awareness for our campus cupboard. Students can donate their flex dollars that don't roll over at the end of the semester. About our Program:Choral Studies and Participation at Missouri Western offers a wide variety of choral and performance opportunities. Auditions for ensemble participation are held each fall for the academic year. Scholarships are available for those who apply. Check out our Scholarship Application page for audition dates for incoming freshmen and for more information.International Touring: Anyone in the Missouri Western choral program can join one of our overseas choir tours, which occur every three years. In May 2017, the choir enjoyed eight days in Ireland, performing in historic venues and experiencing Irish culture.Concert ChoraleThe Concert Chorale is a non-audition ensemble made up of students from across campus — those majoring or minoring in music as well as non-music degrees. This ensemble enjoys performing challenging repertoire in a fun, high-energy environment. The Concert Chorale performs for University events and three public concerts per year, including the annual Missouri Western High School Honor Choir. Recent concerts include Mendelssohn’s Elijah at the Kauffman Center for Performing Arts, Mozart’s Requiem with the Saint Joseph Symphony Orchestra, and Faure’s Requiem with the Missouri Western State University Orchestra.Chamber SingersThe Chamber Singers is the University’s top vocal auditioned ensemble made up of the finest voices in our region. They recently performed at the Missouri Music Educators Association’s 80th Annual Conference and In-Service. This ensemble performs several times per year and serves as the department’s major touring choral ensemble. Interested in auditioning? Register for Concert Chorale (MUS 338), and you will receive an email during the first week of August with an audition packet. Auditions take place on the Sunday afternoon before the first day of fall classes on the campus of Missouri Western.Opera WorkshopProviding workshops in staged music productions each fall and spring semesters, the MUS 318 course is available by audition to all Missouri Western students, singer and non-singer alike. Each actor/singer experiences the wonder of performing on stage with costumes, sets and orchestra. Past works have included full productions of Menotti’s The Medium, The Telephone, Barber’s Hand of Bridge on the main stage and scenes from Sondheim’s Into the Woods, performed for the Missouri Western Foundation dinner.

Leadership Development That Lasts a Lifetime​Army ROTC is an elective curriculum you take along with your required college classes. It prepares you with the tools, training and experiences that will help you succeed in any competitive environment. You will have a normal college student experience like everyone else on campus, but when you graduate, you will be an Officer in the Army.Two-Year ROTC Program​Our two-year program is designed for junior and sophomore level students who were unable to enroll in ROTC during their first two academic years. The two-year program substitutes a five-week Army Leadership Training Course at Fort Knox, Kentucky, for the Military Science 100- and 200-level courses. This leadership orientation is designed for sophomores with no prior military training. Students should attend the Leadership Training Course between their sophomore and junior years.Four-Year ROTC Program​Our four-year program consists of 26 credit hours of Military Science courses on campus, which includes 20 hours of upper-level ROTC courses. First-semester sophomores who did not take Military Science during their freshman year may compress the basic program during their sophomore year by taking a 100-level and a 200-level course.Army CommissionIn addition to military science courses, students desiring to obtain an Army commission must take at least one course in military history. Additionally, students must demonstrate a basic swimming ability.All students seeking a commission must attend two five-week advanced training and assessment experiences normally in the summer between freshman and sophomore years and junior and senior years. Attendance may be deferred until after senior year at the discretion of the Chairperson of Military Science. The Basic Camp and Advanced Camp are at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Additionally, students may compete throughout their time as a contracted cadet for selection to attend additional training at the Army Airborne School, Air Assault School, Northern Warfare School, Mountain Warfare School or Combat Diver Qualification course. Cadets will have the opportunity to compete for internships with both army and foreign military units either in the continental United States or overseas.Advanced PlacementPrior active duty service members, Army Reservists and National Guardsmen who have completed basic training and high school junior ROTC graduates are eligible for placement directly into the advanced ROTC program (last two years of military science) with the consent of the Chairperson of Military Science. Eligible students request permission from the Chairperson of Military Science to enter the advanced course.Learning Beyond the ClassroomIn Missouri Western’s ROTC program, you will receive outstanding leadership training. The program offers many training events in addition to classroom instruction and practical lab exercises. Golden Griffon Marching BandBecome a member of this exciting performance based ensemble! The 140+ members of this marching band perform at Griffon Football home games and various special events and festivals in the region. The GGMB has performed in exhibition at the Blue Springs Marching Festival, The Carrolton Band Days, the Southwest Iowa Band Jamboree, the St. Joseph Southside Parade, The Lincoln (NE) All‐City Festival, Valleyfest in West Des Moines, IA and the Greater St. Louis Marching Festival.The GGMB host the annual Tournament of Champions marching festival in Spratt Stadium on the Missouri Western campus. The color guard uses different colors and styles of flags to enhance the visual effect of the marching band as a whole. Colorguard is also a team, best friends, and a lot of the times we are as close as sisters. We work with each other to make everything as graceful and beautiful as we can. This is what makes up the Golden Griffon Guard.

GPH is an Applied Learning initiative for Missouri Western State University. Our mission is to produce content for GPH Live!, Griffon U, and Fauxtoreality.Griffons in the (Production) HouseAs the state’s designated Applied Learning University, Missouri Western is uniquely positioned to offer opportunities that extend beyond the classroom. These hands-on experiences enable students to grow, explore and ultimately grasp how the knowledge they learned in the classroom works outside the walls.One such opportunity emerging from Potter Hall, but available to students of all disciplines, is Griffon Production House (GPH). Originating from conversations between students and cinema professor Thomas Brecheisen, GPH encourages students to hone their craft in cinematic arts, learn how to work with others toward a common goal and see how pieces of the big picture fit together.Students from any major can participate, with opportunities ranging from production and camera operation to editing and special effects. With a variety of projects, students can find an opportunity that sparks their cinematic passion.GPH is truly a student-led applied learning opportunity with three affiliates: GPH Live!, Griffon University and Fauxtoreality.GPH Live! films and produces video of live performances on campus and in the community. Recently, to help overcome the restriction on live audiences, more than a dozen Missouri Western students from cinema, music and art worked in collaboration with A/V students from Central High School in St. Joseph on two video productions of Central’s musical, “The Addam’s Family.” “This was a sweet moment because we helped these wonderful students … share their hard work and talent with their family and friends who couldn’t see them live,” Brecheisen said. “It’s one of my most cherished experiences, and I’m very proud of our students’ service to our community.”The possibility for collaboration with Missouri Western’s research students is impressive, too. Through another affiliate, Griffon University, students produce videos of Missouri Western research in short, easy-to-digest formats that can be easily consumed in today’s fast-paced, digital world.These productions rely heavily on greenscreen, motion graphics and visual effects. Post-production visual effects are the essence of the third affiliate – Fauxtoreality. “Visual effects [VFX] aren’t just spaceships and aliens,” Brecheisen said. “VFX artists are the only artists who don’t want you to see their work. It should be invisible to the audience to increase their suspension of belief.”“It’s a lot of fun,” Brecheisen added. “Students are learning these new techniques, and that makes our BAA unique across the country. We’ve infused [VFX] in our program so the students can start using it.” The unparalleled opportunities provided to students through this program prepare them to enter the fast-paced career field upon graduation by keeping them up to date with industry standards.Ultimately, these students are using the techniques they are learning in the classroom. And these experiences afford a great advantage when starting their careers.“I don’t want them to be job-ready when they graduate. Because of GPH, students will be job-ready before they graduate,” Brecheisen says. Jazz EnsemblesThe Missouri Western Music Department supports a comprehensive jazz program, offering university students the opportunity to participate in ensemble settings as well as classes in the jazz curriculum. St. Joseph’s and Missouri Western’s close proximity to a major metro area also offers the students numerous opportunities to perform in the region, whether in university ensembles or their own groups. Since 2010, the Missouri Western Music Department has offered a Concentration in jazz, open to all music majors. The Missouri Western State University Jazz Ensemble is one of two large jazz ensembles in the music program, and is the premiere jazz group of the university. The Jazz Ensemble has a rich and deep heritage of giving outstanding performances across the Midwest. Accomplishments include performing at the Elmhurst Jazz Festival in Chicago, the Wichita Jazz Festival, the Mobile Jazz Festival, as well as performing at the Missouri Music Educators Convention. Last year saw the Jazz Ensemble perform several times in the region as well as perform for the second time in three years at the Missouri Music Educators Conference. The Missouri Western Jazz Ensemble performs an eclectic mix of literature, ranging from the great classics of Duke Ellington and Count Basie, to new and original material by some of today’s leading writers.The Jazz Ensemble is conducted by Bob Long [email removed] Jazz Lab is the second of two big bands on the Missouri Western campus. The ensemble is open (through auditions) to any majors and non-majors on campus. The Jazz Lab’s focus is to further develop an appreciation and understanding of jazz literature written for this genre. A variety of literature is covered, ranging from newer originals to historical transcriptions. The Jazz Lab gives 3 to 4 performances each school year. As the name implies, the Jazz Lab is also used as a lab band, and may have student directors (who are in Jazz Pedagogy) standing in front of the group at various times working on their conducting/rehearsing skills. ProceduresThe official lost and found for the University is located in the Blum Student Union in room 228 in the Vice President for Student Affairs office. Any found or unclaimed property can be turned into this location where it is kept in a secure location. Items are generally held for the remainder of the academic year in which it was turned in or longer if required by law until they are claimed.Lost Items:There are several options available to report your lost property.You may report in person by stopping in the office in Blum 228, give us a call at (816) 271-4432 or you may send an email to [email removed] with a description of your lost item.Logging Items:Items that are turned in are inventoried upon arrival and logged into the Lost and Found database, listing the item; the date turned in, a description of the item and then placed in a secure location. A log is available to individuals missing items. We will list the lost items with their names, email or phone number and contact them if their item is turned in.Our staff will make every effort to contact the individual as soon as possible if the item contains identification. The Missouri Western Players is dedicated to creating theatrical events to raise awareness and bring forth conversations of socially relevant issues and to promote a better understanding of acting in general. From improv to skit writing, students will have the chance to hang out with their peers and learn more about the art of acting.

Since its creation, the chapter has been involved in a variety of projects. One such project is Share the Harvest, where members help the state agency collect venison to be processed and distributed to feed the needy. They deliver around 6,000 meals a year. Another project is assisting the state in antler measurements and demographic data at meat processing plants. The chapter has been given four sites to work on, the most out of any other organization in the state. TWS students also play an active role in activities at Remington Nature Center, Missouri Department of Conservation, Super Science Saturday, and Prairie Days, among many others.Students do not need to be a Wildlife Conservation and Management major to join TWS. Students from all academic areas enjoy the comradery and friendships that are a part of being in the organization and can truly benefit from the experience and networking opportunities provided.

Then becoming a physical therapist assistant is for you!As a physical therapist assistant, you are a member of a health care team working under the supervision and direction of a physical therapist. The Resident Assistant Council (RAC) will be the voice of the Resident Assistants (RA’s) onCampus. We will elect a President and a representative for each Residence Hall. Theserepresentatives will meet twice a month with their advisor and talk about any concerns the RA’s mayhave regarding the position. It will also give Professional Staff an opportunity to get RAC’s opinionon any changes they are looking to implement. RAC will help to improve the RA position each yearwhile also improving the experience of the residents. RAC will work hand in hand with RHA toensure that everyone’s voice is heard and the residence halls are a welcoming and safe place for allwho live there.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMThe Missouri Western Respiratory Therapy (RT) Program offers a Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy. RT focuses on prevention, diagnosis, treatment, management and rehabilitation of patients across the lifespan experiencing breathing and/or other cardiopulmonary issues. Respiratory Therapists work in hospitals, nursing homes, offices, sleep labs, rehabilitation facilities and even patients own homes. The program is governed by the Commission on Accreditation of Respiratory Care (CoARC). Sigma Sigma Sigma was founded by a group of eight women on April 20, 1898 in Farmville, Virginia. Margaret Lee Batten, Louise Marie Davis, Martha Trent Featherston, Isabella Merrick, Sallie Jackson Michie, Lelia Scott, Elizabeth Watkins and Lucy Wright set out to establish a sisterhood based on the bond of friendship. Founded at the State Female Normal School (now Longwood University), Tri Sigma became part of the group of sororities known as the “Farmville Four” - four Greek letter sororities established at the State Female Normal School between 1898 and 1901. The Charter of Incorporation was granted by the Commonwealth of Virginia on February 12, 1903, and Tri Sigma adopted its first constitution in April 1903.

Students are considered “pre-majors” until they meet the minimum requirements to be accepted as a social work major. Missouri Western has a split model of advising. In other words, the initial advising of students is split between academic advisors in a central advising office and faculty advisors in each department. Young Life is a Christian ministry that reaches out to middle school, high school, and college students in all 50 of the United States and in more than 100 countries around the world. Our mission is to introduce young adults to Jesus Christ and help them grow in their faith. We accomplish our mission by: 1. Praying for young adults; 2.
