About: Samford Food Heroes (SFH) is a group of students who are passionate about community engagement and have the desire to assist in the mitigation of food insecurity through the rescue and distribution of leftover and/or over-prepared foods from the Samford Cafeteria, from participating campus restaurants, as well as from various student organization events to the non-profit organization, FeedBHM at Grace Klein Community (GKC). This club will provide our current Samford food rescuers/GKC volunteers who are dispersed throughout the university, and any participating Samford student, with an official, centralized campus organization to coordinate rescues efficiently and network amongst themselves. The establishment of this club will also facilitate communication between club members and the Caf managers, between club members and GKC, between club members and Samford campus restaurants, as well as between club members and the student organization event coordinators. In other words, the cafeteria staff, GKC staff, student leaders, and restaurant staff will be able to more easily reach out and connect to members of this club to facilitate communication and organization. Over 30 million people are battling food insecurity in the United States, yet not even two-thirds of them are benefitting from the 20 million pounds of food wasted annually by college campuses- a statistic provided by The Food Network. The establishment of this club will provide a consistent means for reducing food waste on our college campus and making an impact in our community.
