Salt and Light Outreach

The name of the organization shall be Salt and Light Outreach of Samford University. In Matthew 5:13-16, Jesus preaches to his disciples, saying, “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” God calls us to be the Salt and Light of the world, to never lose sight of Christ, and to be a light unto the world so that others see us and give glory to God. With this quote in mind, we want to call the club Salt and Light Outreach. We believe that Salt & Light will support and enhance the mission and values at Samford by developing social/civic responsibility of Samford students interested in helping the community as well as improving the effectiveness of the community through helping provide service, fundraising, and supplies for the homeless population in the Birmingham area.Salt and Light is proud to partner with the Office of Community Engagement as we work to live out a shared commitment to service, civic responsibility, and meaningful community impact. Our organization aligns with the Office of Community Engagement’s mission to foster reciprocal relationships with local and global communities, emphasizing collaboration, respect, and sustainable engagement. Through this connection, our members are encouraged to serve with intentionality, humility, and a deep understanding of community-identified needs. The Office of Community Engagement provides guidance, resources, and accountability that strengthen our efforts and ensure our initiatives reflect ethical service practices and Samford University’s values.By working closely with the Office of Community Engagement, Salta and Light seeks to honor their mission while empowering students to become engaged citizens who lead with compassion, integrity, and purpose, both on campus and beyond.​
