The American Sign Language Club (ASLC) will offer on-campus events/meetings to spread awareness of Deaf culture and practice sign language skills, as well as attend off-campus events hosted by the Alabama Institute of the Deaf and Blind (AIDB) to connect with the Deaf community in Birmingham. Examples of on-campus events include practicing fingerspelling in ASL by baking ASL hand-shape cookies, meeting on Ben Brown to practice signing, and contributing to Christmas Around the World by signing Silent Night with the ASL class. Examples of off-campus events include participating in silent dinners, Deaf coffee chats, Deaf bowling leagues, and Deaf church services. Our purpose is to provide cultural enhancement to academic studies with fun activities outside of the classroominform students of language opportunities on campus, in the Birmingham community, and throughout the United Statesallow students to benefit from the American Sign Language experiences of members of the Samford communityfulfill the Samford motto, "For God, for learning, forever," by encouraging students to explore the ways in which their knowledge of a foreign language can be used to bring glory to God, and to practice the language in order to be life-long learners and to maintain their knowledge and skills.
