Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was founded on January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University. The Ohhh So Outrageous Omicron Mu Chapter was charted on Samford University’s campus on May 14, 1988.The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life and to be of “SERVICE TO ALL MANKIND”.Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® had its humble beginnings as the vision of nine college students on the campus of Howard University in 1908. Since then, the sorority has flourished into a globally-impactful organization of nearly 300,000 college-trained members, bound by the bonds of sisterhood and empowered by a commitment to servant-leadership that is both domestic and international in its scope.As Alpha Kappa Alpha has grown, it has maintained its focus in two key arenas: the lifelong personal and professional development of each of its members; and galvanizing its membership into an organization of respected power and influence, consistently at the forefront of effective advocacy and social change that results in the equality and equity for all citizens of the world.Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated ® is dedicated to implementing programs of service that enhance the social, economic, and educational well-being of the local, national and international communities. Programs remain the heart of AKA. The size and scope of services provided to our communities have grown and significantly improve the quality of life for all who reside within our service areas.The service programs of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated are consistently centered around significant issues that affect our society. This tradition of service and social activism continues to be the hallmark of the sorority and its members in their respective communities and around the global.Each quadrennium, the organization elects a new leader who establishes the theme, focus and direction of the sorority's international program which is implemented at the local, national and international levels. The program theme for 2022-2026 is Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood: The International Program includes six initiatives, with the program theme being the foundation, that are designed to advance the mission of Alpha Kappa Alpha with excellence and underscore our commitment to sustainable service.The additional program initiatives under "Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood" is 1.) Empower our Families2.) Build Our Economic Wealth 3.) Enhance Our Environment4.) Advocate for Social Justice5.) Uplift Our Local Community
