Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee History and MissionFor more than 35 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee (BBBS) has provided children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported, one-to-one mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.As an ailiate of the nation’s oldest and largest youth mentoring organization, BBBS makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers and children. Our mentoring programs are proven by independent research to help children who face adversity succeed in and out of school. We hold ourselves accountable for each child in our program achieving three priority youth outcomes—academic improvement, avoidance of risky behavior, and social/emotional development.Change a life for the better, forever!Did you know that you can change a life for the better, forever? If you have an hour a week, you can! With many school-aged children who face adversity on our waiting list in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee is actively seeking new volunteers for our school-based Mentoring Program. Our professional, trained sta will be with you every step of the way. College students make great mentors!Basic Program Requirements: All volunteers must go through a thorough screening process which includes a formal application, layered criminal background screening, references checks and an in-person interview. We ask for a minimum two-year relationship and the availability to meet with the child on a weekly basis. For our school-based program, all volunteers must be 18 years or older and out of high school.School-based MentoringBBBS also operates several mentoring programs at schools in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties. Like the Community-based Mentoring Program, the School-based Mentoring Program focuses on our three priority youth outcomes: academic improvement, avoidance of risky behavior, and social/emotional development. In the school-based program, mentors go to the school once each week and spend time with their Little. About half of the time is spent doing homework or other school projects, and half of the time is spent in planned activities to enhance educational achievement.Click here to view our School-based Mentoring locations and times.
