Cornell University Library’s Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections commemorates the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence (1776–2026) with an exhibition of rare books, letters, and documents on the life of George Washington. These highlights of the collection reflect the interests of Cornell’s first president, Andrew Dickson White, who had a fascination with both American history and book collecting. The acquisition of rare materials relating to Washington and his era formed an integral part of White’s educational vision. Despite subsequent transformations in the discipline, White’s principle remains resonant: collecting, displaying, and teaching with rare books, autographs, signatures, and portraits make history tangible and alive.
