"China and the Global Economic Order" - A Book Talk with Authors Gregory T. Chin and Kevin Gallagher

Join us for the China and the Global Economic Order (2026) book talk. Authors Gregory T. Chin and Kevin Gallager trace how China has transformed its role within and outside of the Bretton Woods Institutions (BWIs), from a “rule-taker” to a “rule-shaker” and ultimately a “rule-maker” by shaping new financial institutions such as the AIIB and the New Development Bank. Through the concept of “two-way countervailing power,” Chin and Gallagher show how China’s actions, together with other countries of the BRICS+ and Global South, are reshaping the norms, rules, policies and practices of global monetary and financial governance, and provoking new responses from Western powers. Speakers: Gregory T. Chin is Associate Professor of Political Science/Political Economy at York University, Canada, and a Non-Resident Senior Fellow with the Global China Initiative at the Boston University Global Development Policy Center, and of the Foreign Policy Institute at the Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies. He is the Co-Director of the Emerging Global Governance (EGG) Project at Global Policy journal online, with Dr. Eva-Maria Nag. He has published widely on the international and comparative political economy of China, Asia, the BRICS and international money and global finance. He is on the advisory or editorial boards of the journal Review of International Political Economy, Global Governance, and The Journal of East Asian Studies. Before joining York University, Dr. Chin worked in the Government of Canada from 2000-2007, in Ottawa at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the Canadian International Development Agency from 2000-2003, and as First Secretary at the Canadian Embassy in Beijing from 2003-2006. Kevin P. Gallagher is the Director of Boston University Global Development Policy Center and a Professor of Global Development Policy at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University. He advises global policy on climate, debt, and development, including as Lead Expert on Multilateral Development Bank Reform for Brazil’s G20 Presidency. He co-chairs initiatives on green debt relief and Belt and Road sustainability and has served on U.S. and international advisory bodies. A prolific author, he has written eight books, with his latest China and the Global Economic Order published in Cambridge University Press. Lunch will be served.
