McKinsey consultants wrote a book called CEO Excellence precisely because they found the absence of a clear definition “unsettling.” CEOs themselves offer widely inconsistent answers, even as they each do the job: “Strategy, talent, team.” - First-time CEO (New York Stock Exchange-listed Fortune 50) “Culture stewardship, external articulation of strategy, and contested decisions where someone has to make the final call.” - Two-time CEO (~$20m revenue, PE-backed) “Talent, strategy, M&A, and the impact of generative AI on the business.” - First-time CEO (~$300m ARR, PE-backed) “Building a moat through the network; fostering breakout growth; and prioritizing customer sentiment.” - First-time CEO (~$200m ARR, PE-backed) Steve Tappin, author of The Secrets of CEOs told CNN, “Probably two thirds of CEOs are struggling. I don't feel there's really a place where they can learn to be CEOs, so I think most of them are making it up.” This four-week lab, taught by former CEO and BC ‘09 alum Cory Munchbach, is based on interviews with dozens of CEOs and research for an upcoming book written for aspiring and soon-to-be first-time CEOs, full of all the hard-earned learnings that no one tells you before you step into the job. Each session will focus on an element of the role and include a hands-on section where students will tackle a real scenario in a CEO role play.
