Regular and meaningful feedback is essential to the learning process. Formative feedback helps students identify areas for improvement, focus their energy and attention in productive ways, and persist when things get tough. But finding time for feedback—for faculty to provide it and for students to process it—can be tricky, especially for new faculty as they adjust to the norms and expectations of a new institution. In this New Faculty Seminar, we’ll look at some of the research on why feedback matters and different ways of approaching it, leaving plenty of time for participants to share their particular struggles and strategies for creating manageable feedback loops for students. If there's interest, we can also discuss how student performance—in and out of class—can help us figure out where our instructional efforts are paying off and where we might make adjustments.
